Crete

22 Sep, 2026

When people picture Crete, they often think of the bustling harbor of Chania or the crowded sands of Elafonisi, but heading east into the Lasithi region unlocks a tranquil mix of coastal beauty, ancient history, and olive groves. From our cozy suite near Agios Nikolaos, a rental car gave us the freedom to explore traditional mountain villages like Kritsa and trek through its slot gorge. Our adventures took us everywhere from the trail of the Richti Gorge — a pristine natural wonder within the Sitia UNESCO Global Geopark — to the historic seaside streets of Ierapetra, the southernmost city in Europe. Whether we were discovering centuries-old architecture or unwinding by our pool after a day on the road, East Crete proved to be the ultimate Mediterranean getaway.
